Artist Statement:

Putting a piece of myself on the wall of a gallery, spotlit, for strangers to assess, is a vulnerable position to be in. Torn between the urge to run away and the urge to lash out, I freeze, unable to do anything, unable to even acknowledge that the things I perceived as threats could be opportunities. Meanwhile, the tension builds until I am in real danger of snapping.

Whether the vulnerability comes from feeling exposed, cornered, or inadequate, I suffer the same tug-of-war of instinct to simultaneously hide and fight. By creating artwork that requires vulnerability as an element of its design, and by embracing the circumstance that feels threatening, this series of self-portraits has become a courageous alternative to paralysis and a chance to grow.
