Describe at least 3 goals for the term.
  • Become fully comfortable with woodworking tools. For some tools, this means becoming knowledgeable about the uses and maintenance. For power tools, this would additionally mean competent enough to use the tool confidently and safely.
  • Learn new methods and seek to apply them to concepts I'm already invested in. Specifically, I would like to explore metal, casting, and ceramics.
  • Experiment with kinetic sculpture. I would love to create something that moves with a crank or another mechanical means, but I have no idea where one starts to learn and work toward this goal!
Name sculptors who have been influential or inspirational for your work.
  • Beth Cavener
Beth Cavener does with her animal forms what I would like to do with human forms. They are realistic, yet stylized. The animals frequently carry something of the human in them, whether that be emotively or through anatomical edits.

  • Ai WeiWei
Ai WeiWei's work is very different from mine, but I am greatly inspired by his work. First, by his intentionality. Every work means something, and is often tied not just to an idea, but concrete human events. Secondly, by haunting beauty of his work. Every work is visually stunning, but it also somehow lets you know that there is something more to it that you should know. Third, by his craftsmanship. Materials often elevated by the care and precision with which he uses them.

  • Kim Caisse
Kim Caisse is perhaps not what most would call a "fine artist," as that is not how she's made her profession. However, I'm drawn in by her fantastic characters, mysterious scenes, and magical stories. Her work carries a tone that feels one part bedtime story and one part late-night walk in the woods. I also feel a certain affection for the accessibility of her pieces in terms of size, material, and relatability.

What other 3D courses have you taken? (Design II, Sculpture, Ceramics….)
Sculpture and Basic Design

What sculpture tools/techniques do you already know?
I have some experience with woodworking power tools (circular saw, jig saw, miter saw, table saw, planer, electric sander, belt sander, electric drill), but not to an extent of great comfort. Considerably more comfort with tape measures, levels, and screwdrivers. (Ha, ha.) A small amount of experience with chiseling plaster, although not significant knowledge. Moderate knowledge and experience with sewing, particularly clothing.

What sculpture tools/techniques do you want to learn?
I would love to become familiar with cutting and welding metal, creating molds and pouring casts, and working with clay.
